The Portugal Golden Visa program (D7 Visa) is a residency by investment initiative designed to attract foreign investors to Portugal. Launched in 2012, the program offers non-EU citizens the opportunity to obtain a residence permit in Portugal in exchange for qualifying investments. The Golden Visa is particularly popular among those looking for a pathway to EU residency and benefits.

Applicant Requirements

  • Investment: Make a qualifying investment and maintain for a minimum period of 5 years
  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old
  • Criminal Record: Clean criminal record from country of origin and from Portugal
  • Minimum stay: Stay in Portugal for at least 7 days during the first year and 13 days in subsequent two-year periods.
  • Education: No requirement
  • Language: No requirement

Qualifying Investments

  • Investment fund and Private Equity: A minimum contribution of €500,000 for the acquisition of units in a fund committed to companies incorporated in Portugal (with a maturity of at least 5 years) and where at least 60% of the investment portfolio are companies with a registered office in Portugal. Real estate entities do not qualify.
  • Research and Development: Invest a minimum of €500,000 in a public or private scientific research institution.
  • Cultural Heritage Donation: €250,000 donation invested in support national cultural heritage or artistic initiatives can qualify under the program.
  • Business and Start-Up: Investment of €500,000 in an existing company with the creation of 5 permanent jobs or maintenance of at least 10, or Incorporation of a company in Portugal that creates 5 permanent jobs.
